And if her more recent work has become somewhat less violent, her combative spirit remains alive and well in her ambition to crush all opponents at Magic: The Gathering, which she often plays online for nine hours at a stretch. I very much wanted to be a fearsome warrior.”įearsome warriors feature prominently in Brosh’s childhood writings, which mostly revolve around an endless succession of battles with fierce monsters. “I was very into the Aragorn-type characters. “I read a lot of Tolkien growing up,” says Brosh in Episode 97 of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast.

In 1933, Duras embarked alone for Paris to study law and mathematics. Duras returned to Saigon again with Paul and her mother in 1932 and completed her second baccalaureate, leaving Pierre in France. In 1931, when she was 17, Duras and her family moved to France and she completed her baccalaureate. The family struggled financially and her mother made a bad investment in an isolated property and area of rice farmland in Prey Nob, a story which was fictionalized in Un Barrage contre le Pacifique. They then moved back to French Indochina when she was posted to Phnom Penh followed by Vĩnh Long and Sa Đéc. Between 19, the surviving family lived in France while her mother was on administrative leave. Henri Donnadieu fell ill, returned to France, and then died in 1921. Marguerite had two older siblings: Pierre, the eldest, and Paul. Her parents, Marie (née Legrand, 1877-1956) and Henri Donnadieu (1872-1921), were teachers from France who likely had met at Gia Định High School. Marguerite Duras was born Marguerite Donnadieu on 4 April 1914, in Gia Định, Cochinchina, French Indochina (now Vietnam). Both of our leads have gotten involved in managing smuggling gangs for different reasons. Yet, the main characters are, in fact, aristocrats involved in underground, clandestine activities during the danger of the night. This story takes place in the beautiful countryside of Norfolk, England during tumultuous times between France & England, as both countries are at war with one another. This book is such a sumptuous read! It’s like eating your favorite, most exotic fruit one juicy bite at a time! After reading the synopsis of the book, I thought I was in for a story about smuggling gangs in the rookeries of London, or something of that sort…but this fantastic story was far more (and far from that initial image). In front of a star-studded crowd, at the New York Historical Society, comedian, actor, writer, and director Michael Showalter, the evening’s other presenters, and the Audio Publishers Association honored the industry and the year’s best audiobooks. Of course, we felt strongly that Tina Fey’s Bossypants was clearly Audiobook of the Year, and are so incredibly grateful that the judges agreed with us." "The creativity and dedication that went into the production, marketing, and sales of all the finalists makes this award even sweeter. "This Audiobook of the Year win was overwhelming for our entire team-we knew going in that the competition was incredibly stiff, so didn’t want to bank on the hat trick, no matter how amazing our nominee was," said Megan Fitzpatrick, Associate Director, Marketing & Publicity at Hachette Audio/Hachette Digital. Upon learning what it was, what it represented, and, ultimately, what it lead to, it changed the way I thought about comic books entirely. During that period my father got me a subscription to a now defunct magazine called “Wizard.” While I used to only enjoy finding pictures of Spawn or over-the-top sexualized women of the 90s (let’s remember, it was the 90s and if you don’t believe me just do a Google search for 90s Wonder Woman and let your mind do the rest) eventually I did start to enjoy the book for the articles and the writing.Īnyway, within those pages I saw them repeatedly reference a book called Marvels, written by Kurt Busiek, with beautiful painted illustrations by Alex Ross. Like, for sure the last 6 months of 1999. My real induction into modern comic books came in the very late 90s. Nice town, huh? “Phil Sheldon” Kurt Busiek, Marvels Issue #3 –and blaming the Marvels for the fear they’d felt. And they were taking it out on the Marvels, denying what had happened– …The whole city seemed embarrassed somehow–ashamed of their terror, now that it had passed and they were still alive. Why hadn’t they acted sooner? Could they prove the world was in danger? Instead of ticker-tape parades, we got doubts–accusations–innuendo. –name bridges and mountains after them and invite them to dinner at the White House.Īt least I would have expected it. You would have expected us to canonize The Fantastic Four– You would have expected our gratitude to last forever. “Often while we’re sleeping, our mind is busy working out solutions to problems about which we’ve felt stressed while we were awake, though our dreams might seem completely unrelated to what’s really bothering us,” the doctors explained, one by one. Nothing good ever seemed to happen to anyone who found out about my problems, which had more or less caused my parents’ divorce, even if Mom didn’t know it. You never died, got resuscitated, then had a boy follow you back from the realm of the dead. That’s because the worst thing that’s ever happened to you, Mom, I’d wanted to tell her, is your divorce from Dad. “She talks in her sleep - sorry, sweetheart, but you do - about a boy following her. Pierce keeps having the most terrible nightmares.” My mom used to say this to all the doctors we saw right after the accident. But The Language Instinct is no encyclopedia. In The Language Instinct, Steven Pinker, one of the world's leading scientists of language and the mind, lucidly explains everything you always wanted to know about language: how it works, how children learn it, how it changes, how the brain computes it, how it evolved. Some are from everyday experience: Why do immigrants struggle with a new language, only to have their fluent children ridicule their grammatical errors? Why can't computers converse with us? Why is the hockey team in Toronto called the Maple Leafs, not the Maple Leaves? Some are from popular science: Have scientists really reconstructed the first language spoken on earth? Are there genes for grammar? Can chimpanzees learn sign language? And some are from our deepest ponderings about the human condition: Does our language control our thoughts? How could language have evolved? Is language deteriorating?
